Dental

Just like humans, our pets are vulnerable to gum disease and problems with their teeth. Dentistry is a rapidly growing area of veterinary science as growing evidence that periodontal disease can be associated with other more serious health issues. The obvious issues are similar to humans - if we didn't brush out teeth, tartar build-up affects teeth and gum health, leads to tooth decay, and costly surgeries. Going to the dentist for check-ups is a good preventative to keep our health in check.

At West Blacktown Veterinary Clinic, we perform our dental procedures in 2 different stages - dental staging (see below for inclusions), and dental extractions if required. This is to ensure your pet is not under anaesthetic for a prolonged period of time, ensuring better recovery and safety.

Dental Staging includes:

  • Preanaesthetic blood testing
  • General Anaesthetic and intravenous fluids
  • Comprehensive oral examination
  • Reviewing gum health

  • Descale of tartar and polishing teeth

Common signs of dental disease include:

  • Yellow-brown tartar around the gum line
  • Inflamed, red gums
  • Bad breath
  • Sometimes changes in eating or chewing habits (especially in cats)
  • Pawing at the face or mouth
  • Excessive drooling
  • Pain or bleeding when you touch the gums or mouth

After your pet's dental staging procedure, your veterinarian will advise you whether or not dentistry extractions are required. We will then go through this process with you.

Brushing
Teeth Daily

Just like us! This is the best form of dental hygiene. Pet toothbrushes and toothpaste are available. You can also purchase teeth gels and cleansing wipes. Please do not use human toothpaste formulas as they are not designed to be swallowed and may be toxic to your pet.

Teeth Friendly Chews and Toys

Use dental toys or chews, both of which may help keep the teeth clean.

Special
Dental Diets

Feed pets special dental diets. The mechanical action of chewing these biscuits can help reduce the accumulation of tartar.
