Desexing (also known as speying, castrating, neutering, or sterilising) is a routine surgery where all (or part) of your pets reproductive organs are removed. This not only has many health benefits for your pet but also reduces undesirable aggression and territorial behaviour, and prevents unwanted litters.
What is the ideal age for desexing?
The ideal age for desexing can vary depending on breed, size, health and individual circumstance. At West Blacktown Veterinary Clinic, we will assess your pet and recommend the best time for desexing after taking into account several considerations.
What is the procedure for desexing, and what does the cost include?
Our desexing costs are all inclusive. They include a preoperative health check, a general anaesthetic, intravenous fluids during surgery, the surgery itself, and the pain relief following. It also includes the nursing care pre and post procedure, as well as the post operative check with a nurse a week after the procedure.
Will desexing hurt my dog or cat?
Desexing is performed under general anaesthetic but surgeries can leave a pet tender post-surgery. Following surgery, we will provide pain relief medication and a plan to help assist recovery for your pet.
